I've never managed to get this working either, unfortunately. It may be
that I'm doing something wrong.
Looking at the appropriate files under Documentation, it would seem that
you do have to add an entry to your boot line. Apparently acceleration
does not work on the alpha.

I've tried booting with something like this:
boot sda7:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/sda10 video=matrox:noaccel:vesa:0x105

....but that doesn't work (I have matroxfb compiled into the kernel and
I'm using a Millenium II card.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Anyone have any ideas?
