Freeze-up with Red Hat 5.2 on Alpha (21164)

I just installed RH 5.2 and everything seemed to go fine.

System has two SCSI diska and one SCSI tape, one ATAPI CD-ROM,
one floppy, one S3 video card.

After some time, the system just froze and I was unable to reach the host
externally through TCP/IP nor through the locaol console.  This has happened
twice now and I have gone back to my previous disk setup with RH 5.1.

I never got a chance to recompile the kernel for tape support, nor did I get
a chance to load the new kernel stuff from RH errata.

Any suggestions to help me out of this mess would be greatly appreciated.
