console for an alphastation200?

I am trying to compile a kernel for my new AS200 and I can't seem to get
the console to work.

I have tryed both 2.0.36 and 2.2.0-pre2.

with 2.0.36 I get errors when trying to build a TGA console, if I fix those
errors with "extern" definitions of the missing refrences then linking fails.

with VGA console I get nothing after milo starts the kernel. the box boots but
there is no console output anymore.

same with 2.2.0-pre2 and I didn't see an option for TGA console there.

any ideas? (other than putting the console on a serial port)
