I've sent this to 'chat' because I thought it's not
'technical enough' for freenet-devl.
I must praise the vast improvement which occurred
in Freenet from 0.2 to 0.3.
Freenet is getting dangerously close to being
easily usable in the mainstream (ie for lobotomized windoze users), especially
with Michael's nice email-to-web keyserver.
If this is the desired direction for Freenet, then
there's one thing I'd like to suggest...
Is there any way to embed a Java interpreter into
the Freenet servent? Is there a GPL java which would consent to
this?
Otherwise, could it be possible to bundle in a java
with the freenet installation program?
Why I ask this is that (IMHO) there's a significant
number of Window$ users who will lose interest if they have to traverse several
web pages in search of a Java interpreter, or whose eyes will glaze over at the
installation window which asks them to choose a java interpreter. Also, the
javas that are built into Windoze don't seem to work properly (at least not on
Win2k). The Sun java runtime env works perfectly.
With java embedded, then the word java would not
even need to be mentioned on the main Freenet web pages, and Freenet would
appear as yet another easily downloadable and installable window$
app.
I suggest that the majority of Window$ users will
feel no need for java, except for running Freenet (that is, unless someone
implements a native Win32 version of Freenet).
Cheers
David
