Although what you are saying is true, most of the organizations I have worked
with that use Netscape are setting their client's Preferences to point to
some POP server, not localhost. (or the IMAP server on the central mail
server)

With Windows clients, POP is the norm, and in many shops with Unix
workstations, their Netscape client points to a central POP server as well.

With unix clients, funneling each user's email to their desktop to localhost
is technically possible, but if you do it that way though, then you have to
make sure that your corporate email server then properly rewrites the From
headers so that they don't show individual hosts. More sysadmin. Plus now
you've got me juggling help desk problems with sendmail et al on individual
workstations.

It's much simpler to just have the users hit a pop server (mail.domain.com)
and be done with it, regardless of the platform, Mac, Win, *nix.

And as Linux/FreeBSD make their way into the corporate paradigm, their client
email app should be just as passive.

The last thing you want is to have to manage the individual mail systems on
client workstations, especially with a lot of machines.

I want my mailer app to completely handle getting pop mail or whatever - IMAP
- etc. automatically. and the same functionality across platforms. (POP,
IMAP, LDAP, sound alerts, blah blah blah)
