Even without XML, this could be satisfied with use of the
OBJECT tag.  Inserting a "text/plain" object or a "text/html"
object should Just Work, no hackery needed, just HTML 4.0 
support.
Degradation of the resulting page might not be as nice, but
that's the price paid sometimes when you push 
stuff off to the client -- you have less control over what
happens after it leaves the server :-).
