Reading table information for completion

Does anyone know what causes the following to appear for *some* databases
when launching the mysql client, and not for others?

"Reading table information for completion of table and column names
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A"

I can't seem to pin down what difference there should be - and the manual
doesn't mention it.
