You may have a permissions problem.  I had the same error.

Ensure that /var, /var/lib, and /var/lib/mysql have the following
permissions:  drwxr-xr-x

then restart the client.

I ran mysql_install_db it created the tables and the database fine. but I am

having trouble starting the server i am getting error cannot connect with 
/var/lib/mysq/mysql.sock (111)
Any clue?
