Error reporting under php

We've got mysql-server-3.23.36 installed on our FreeBSD 4.3 server, and
scripting with mod_php4 under apache-1.3.19_1.

We've noticed that we do not get errors reported with we issue a query
with an error in it in our php scripts.  We get other types of errors
reported by php (reporting all errors), but not mysql query problems.

When we hosted with an isp in the past, they had this working -
wondering if anybody has a clue?
